Strategies Unlimited publishes research on LED module market

Strategies Unlimited has published its first market research focused specifically on LED modules used both in display backlighting and general solid-state lighting (SSL) applications. “The worldwide market for LED modules” report is available now and projects general lighting as a growth market for modules through the end of the decade while documenting broad module usage in the backlighting application today.
Strategies Unlimited publishes research on led indoor lighting wholesale market
The new report defines modules as a product with multiple packaged LEDs mounted on a printed circuit board with no driver electronics on the module The researchers will classify such products that integrate drivers as light engines -.. Essentially aligning with Zhaga definitions The modules covered in the report may have optical or thermal components installed on the module. The report notes that virtually every lighting product could be said to have a module integrated within based on the definition. But the report is focused on modules that are sold on an OEM basis to lighting manufacturers as opposed to modules manufactured in house by lighting manufacturers.
The report found that OEM modules are already commonplace in backlighting applications with some specific product categories near 100% saturation. So not surprisingly, the backlighting segment dominates module revenue today.
Still, the general SSL segment will migrate increasingly to modules through the end of the decade. Modules clearly allow lighting companies to deliver new products to market more quickly. Moreover, standardization, such as within the bounds of the Zhaga Consortium, could also enable lighting manufacturers to choose from multiple module manufacturers. The report does note, however, that Zhaga represents a small percentage of modules sold today despite the fact that major manufacturers are members of the organization.
While general lighting has overtaken backlighting as the largest consumer of packaged LEDs by revenue, lighting will not become the dominant market for modules until the 2018 timeframe. You can review some of the Strategies Unlimited packaged LED data in articles published on Strategies in Light presentations by the analysts.
Still, LED modules for general lighting represent a significant market today with the report stating 2013 revenue at $ 1.3B (billion). Strategies Unlimited projects that number to grow at a 32.8% rate to $ 7.8B by 2019.
The biggest opportunity indoors is in troffer applications and outdoors in street light applications. In part, the growth rate in those applications is simply a parallel of the overall demand for LED lighting in the applications given the huge installed base of fluorescent troffers and the fact that street lighting will be retrofitted around the globe.
Some applications will be gated by the applicability of modules, and retrofit lamps, outside of tubes, will not be a huge market for modules. Downlights conversely are ripe for modules, although the five-year growth rate is not so impressive at 6 % because of the penetration that has already happened in downlights. Primary author and Strategies Unlimited research analyst Stephanie Pruitt said, “The large installed base of troffers and high / low bay luminaires means that although the penetration of modules within LED commercial lighting wholesale and LED area lights is lower than for downlights, the sheer size of the installed base means more potential for LEDs and strong growth for LED modules. “

Cooper Lighting linear LED fixtures graze the walls in the new Mumbai airport terminal

Cooper Lighting has announced an LED commercial lighting wholesale at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India in the recently opened Terminal 2 (T2). Linear products in Cooper’s io Series 2.0 of solid-state lighting (SSL) luminaires are providing the ambient light in the terminal installed along a 4.8-km total length of wall space that is 6m high.
Cooper Lighting linear LED fixtures graze the walls in the new Mumbai airport terminal
The architectural design of the space is surely unique. A perforated, decorative, stainless-steel panel is installed along the walls as you can see in the nearby photo. But the panel is separated from the walls, allowing for light distribution through the perforations. The linear io fixtures are meant for wall grazing and in this application deliver light down the walls and through the panel to deliver the required ambient light.
The airport was looking for both functional light and iconic aesthetics in the terminal design that also features decorative carpets, a bold design, and art. “Our new terminal will not only be a high-traffic destination for travelers, but also a unique architectural design area packed full of energy-efficient products like the io LED fixtures, “said Saurabh Singh, assistant vice president of contracts at GVK and the Mumbai International Airport.
The design, however, presented the airport a challenge in finding an LED lighting product that could deliver the requisite light levels. The airport was seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification for the project and that certification placed demands on the building power density related to lighting.
The steel panels deliver a dramatic visual but also limit the light that passes through. The project team built a mockup of the design to ensure that an led outdoor lighting wholesale could deliver the combination of light levels and energy efficiency required. Cooper reported that the io Series was the only product tested that could deliver floor-to-ceiling uniform lighting and meet power-density requirements.
“Our award-winning LED io line Series 2.0 is a perfect fit for this modern building, providing an ideal blend of energy efficiency and performance to help illuminate the architectural elements of this impressive terminal,” said Mark Eubanks, president, Cooper Lighting Division. “The project leverages efficient solutions to provide a specially designed wall grazing feature that delivers exceptional light quality and uniformity to help enhance the terminal’s aesthetics.”

Ecotek Lighting Installs LED Light Boxes at San Diego Natural History Museum

EcoTek Lighting has installed a high-performance, energy-efficient light box with Direct Backlit led outdoor lighting wholesale Array technology at the San Diego Natural History Museum along with three beautifully designed and engineered poster frames. The three matching poster frames hold movie posters on the south wall of the theater entry vestibule just off the atrium.

The thin-profile, two-inch-deep displays combine superb styling aesthetics with superior functionality, and the all-welded aluminum construction of the extruded lightweight frame ensures premium product durability and is 100% recyclable.

The new light box with Direct Backlit LED Array technology is installed in the 3D theater and replaces two older fluorescent light boxes. The 2”-deep LED light box provides powerful performance, enhanced illumination and ease of use, while also offering space-saving capabilities because of the narrow profile. led indoor lighting wholesale are solid-state light engines that last from 50,000 to 100,000 hours, compared to T-8 fluorescent lamps that only last from 8,000 to 20,000 hours. LED-illuminated light boxes deliver four times greater energy efficiency than fluorescent light boxes, and enable users to qualify for energy and tax rebates.

The energy-saving technology, lower maintenance costs and extreme durability of LEDs decrease CO2 emissions, reduce the associated carbon footprint and help protect the environment to ensure a stable climate for future generations. The use of LEDs helps to save the environment and reduce the carbon footprint of the light box.

Seoul AC-LED light engine enables omnidirectional SSL lamps

Seoul Semiconductor has announced a new Acrich UK led indoor lighting wholesale engine based on the Acrich 3 AC-LED driver IC and Acrich MJT 2525 mid-power LEDs. The company is supplying the solid-state lighting (SSL) module along with a reflector optic that can enable retrofit lamp designs that deliver the omnidirectional beams required in programs such as Energy Star.
Seoul Semiconductor has announced a new Acrich LED light engine based on the Acrich 3 AC-LED driver IC and Acrich MJT 2525 mid-power LEDs.
The new Acrich A19 light engine consists of a round modular circuit board with the MJT 2525 LEDs mounted around the circumference of the board. The Acrich 3 driver IC allows the product to work directly from the AC mains and is mounted near the center of the modular product. Only a few additional discrete components are required in the design that specifically targets retrofit lamps.
Many such planar light engines have come to market for A-lamps and other lamp types. But most project the bulk of the light in the forward direction. Such performance is fine in many applications but omnidirectional beams are preferred in applications such as table lamps where light must be projected downward – in the opposite direction from which the LEDs face.
To enable omnidirectional performance, Seoul developed a circular reflector that is meant to be mounted above the light engine as depicted in the nearby photo. The reflector allows some of the light to escape upwards but also reflects light to the side and down toward the base so long as the planar light engine is mounted at the equator of a diffuser globe.
Seoul Semiconductor developed a circular reflector that is meant to be mounted above the LED light engine.
“The new Acrich A19 module is optimized for the performance and cost requirements of the retrofit lamp market,” said Jay Kim, Seoul Semiconductor executive vice president of lighting sales. “This new module combines the light source, driver, optics, and primary thermal management in a single, compact system, simplifying designs and lowering costs for lighting manufacturers. ”
The new light engine relies on the high-voltage LEDs that Seoul refers to as multi-junction technology (MJT). The specific mid-power MJT 2525 LEDs utilized were introduced back in March.
Seoul says that the 2.5 × 2.5-mm led outdoor lighting wholesale deliver lumen density of 15 lm / mm2 and asserts that output density is among the best performance in the industry. Moreover, the LED includes a primary optic unlike most mid-power devices on the market. Looking closely, you can see the optic dome on the LEDs in the light engine photo, and the dome produces a wider beam angle that helps generate the omnidirectional distribution.
The Acrich 3 AC-LED driver IC was announced at LightFair International back in June. The new driver offers better dimming support when used with phase-controlled dimmers such as triacs, along with the ability to work with a noisy AC input.

Precision-Paragon LEDs light parking for historic Milwaukee shopping venue

LISIDA has announced an led indoor lighting wholesale retrofit project at the parking garage that serves The Shops of Grand Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the facility expects to save $ 134,000 in energy costs annually. Current Electric of nearby Brookfield handled the solid-state lighting (SSL) project that also includes adaptive controls while improving the lighting in the garage.
The Shops of Grand Avenue are located in the historic Plankinton Building, which dates to 1915. The shops opened in 1982 in the Plankinton Arcade, which had previously been an entertainment venue. The shops have become a popular destination for tourists and residents and now the parking facility has been brought up to the latest standards in terms of lighting and safety.
The parking garage was previously lit with 986 150W metal-halide (MH) lights. Current replaced those MH fixtures on a one-for-one basis with 51W P2 VPL LED Vaportight fixtures. The simple conversion to LED lighting reduces the energy usage by 66 %, and adaptive controls increase the savings.
Current equipped each of the new fixtures with occupancy sensors that can detect both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. When an area is vacant, each fixture can reduce its light output by 40% autonomously.
The system also uses daylight sensors that are mounted on the 450 fixtures in areas of the garage that can receive natural light during the day. Those fixtures can extinguish autonomously as light levels allow. Moreover, the fixtures implement a short delay before turning back on when light levels drop to account for instances such as a cloud temporarily blocking some sunlight.
Still, it was also concern over light quality that drove the election of the P2 products. As the nearby before and after photos show, the led outdoor lighting wholesale delivers better uniformity whereas the MH lights created very bright spots under the fixtures. P2 said that the fixture design delivers diffuse light and minimizes glare for drivers.
The project will also deliver significant reduction in maintenance cycles for the lighting, a fact that will be measured in savings and in reducing the perils of maintenance in the garage environment. “Lighting maintenance in parking garages can be difficult, and hazardous,” said Randy Breske, director of lighting business development at Current Electric. “The new lighting system we installed more than doubles the maintenance interval in the parking garage.”
In terms of reliability in general and in the harsh environment, the VPL fixtures carry a 5-year warranty and an IP-67 rating. The latter specification means that the fixtures can withstand a 1500-PSI pressure wash. Based on TM-21 projections , the fixtures carry a reported life of 51,000 hours although the TM-21 calculated projection is 90,000 hours to L70.
The VPL product line ranges in efficacy from 97-103 lm / W depending on the lumen package and CCT. In the Milwaukee case, the facility expects to save 1,344,963 kWh annually and equates that to 949 metric tons of carbon emissions.
Parking-area lighting is one of the specific applications that the US Department of Energy (DOE) has identified as having major potential for energy reduction. We have covered a number of LED-based projects in garages including the Gateway Center Parking Garage in Palatine, Illinois.

Freescale and Samsung team up on LED Display Technology

Arman Naghavi, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Analog, Mixed-Signal and Power Division, pointed out that Freescale’s LED backlight driver technology is the industry’s most compact and integrated solution, their collaboration with Samsung on LED backlighting in order to help spur further innovation and growth in the LCD market.

It’s disclosed Freescale began sampling its led outdoor lighting wholesale technology to Samsung in December 2007. Freescale introduced the first LED backlight product in its portfolio of standard power management ICs in September 2008. The white LED driver IC is designed for control of LED backlights in TVs, as well as in flat-panel monitors. Since 2007, Samsung has successfully launched award-winning products featuring its ultra high-contrast active control LED backlight technology.

As we know, LED technology offers many advantages over conventional cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) lighting systems, which are widely used in conventional LCD displays. Conventional LCD TVs without LED backlight technology are major energy consumers within households. LED backlights with local dimming can help reduce power consumption by up to 60 percent and can enable manufacturers to adopt thinner, lighter form factors.

LED backlighting also enhances the user viewing experience, offers more flexible backlight architectures and enables thinner display designs. Additional benefits of LED backlighting over conventional CCFL technology include higher efficiency, reduced power consumption, enhanced durability and up to 100 times better contrast ratios for clearer definition on screen.

LED technology is free from mercury, a substance known to be toxic to humans. Mercury is a key material in CCFL lighting systems, which are used in 99 percent of existing LCD TV displays. In Europe, the European Directive on the Restriction of Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electronic has mandated that manufacturers must move to mercury-free solutions.

According to IMS Research, the market for semiconductors used in backlighting applications, including LED driver ICs, is expected to grow from $ 1.1 billion in 2008 to $ 2.0 billion in 2012. Jamie Fox, a market research analyst of IMS Research expected that the market for LED backlighting in notebooks, monitors and TVs to grow strongly. In notebooks in particular, rapid growth is widely expected from 2008 to 2010.

Freescale plans to announce additional LED backlighting solutions for LCD TVs, monitors and notebooks in the first half of next year. Also in 2009, the company intends to pursue the automotive, commercial and residential led indoor lighting wholesale markets, which are expected to eventually dwarf the LCD TV market.
